Google Webmaster Tools is something I recommend using for everyone’s website. Adding a Website to Google Webmaster Tools is pretty darn easy thanks to Google’s integration of using your domain name provider log in. To tell the truth I was shocked the other day when I added a new account and saw how easy the Big G had made it.
The other day we posted about how to set up a new Google Analytics account and this is another very important step to take after the analytics installation.
Let’s start things off by getting on over to the Google Webmaster Tools website at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ . If you haven’t logged in to your Google account do that right away to get the ball rolling.
Don’t forget to click on the images to enlarge them for your viewing pleasure.
Once you are logged in it is pretty easy to see what to do next. Simply click the Add a Site button.
Now you will get a little pop-up window that lets you add your domain name. This is pretty self-explanatory. Just do it and click continue!
Now here comes the most awesome and newest part of adding your website to the Webmaster Tools. This is very new, very easy, and very incredible that Google has made this available. All you need to know is your domain name registrar login information and then Google and your registrar work together to figure things out from there. I love this kind of hands off stuff!
You can see my domain is with GoDaddy and all I have to do is click on the GoDaddy logo. Click on your domain name registrar logo and you will get another pop-up window that lets you enter your login information. Enter your login information in this window.
Now you will get a final chance to verify your information. I advise you to do this or you might as well forget my instructions and go take a coffee break. All you have to do is click YES.
Now Google and your domain registrar will take a few seconds to verify your information and confirm that you are who you say you are. This took less than 10 seconds for me. When you see the following screen be sure to click “Continue”.
There is still more you can do to get things all set up properly. Look in the left sidebar and click “Configuration”. More items will open up for you to choose from. Click on the “settings” link and choose your preferred domain. I usually use the one without the www. but that is totally up to you. Google sees websites with the www and without as two different websites.
Once you’ve chosen it will tell you to verify the other website from which you have not chosen. You can do that exactly like these instructions only do the one that you did not do before, either with or without the www. However, this time Google and your domain registrar have already met each other so there is much less to do.
Once you add the other website go into your configuration and settings to check that the new one will use the same preferred domain name that you said earlier.
There are more settings that you can play around with but these are the basics and will get you well on your way to using Google Webmaster Tools to your advantage.
