No one ever said that Google made things easy for novice website owners…or experienced ones for that matter. But this post will take you step by step through the process of how to set up a new Google Analytics Account (without going crazy).
So let’s get things started by going to the Google Analytics main page at http://www.google.com/analytics/ and sign in with your Google account login information.
Please note you can click on these images to enlarge and actually read them!
Once you are logged in click on the admin tab in the upper right hand corner.
Right above the list of your accounts you will see a button that says +New Account. Click that little puppy and you will be on your way.
Creating your New Google Analytics Account for your Website
Now to the fun part. You are going to create your new account here. In the Account Name section give your account a name. You may want to later add other websites under this account so it could be a general Account Name. If you are only tracking one website you can just call it the name of your website like your company name or website subject.
The “Website’s URL” has three choices. They are http://, https://, and Not a website. If your website is a secured site you will use the https. You should be able to see this in the address bar of your website. After figuring that out enter the URL of your site.
The Time Zone section normally has the time zone that you are in on your computer at the time. You can adjust that if you like. Yes, Google knows where you are and what time zone you are in.
Google next lets you choose an Industry Category. They use this to help categorize your site. Your choices are in a dropdown menu and are fairly general but you should be able to find one that fits. Here is what Google says about the Industry Category:
Choose your industry so we can work towards building tailored reports, customized communication, and better education material. Your selection does not affect tracking and data collection.
The Data Sharing Section is next. This is pretty self-explanatory and there are areas there to click on to help explain them to you. Check or uncheck for your choices.
User Agreement Section
Again, the all-knowing Google knows where you are and your country is probably already in this first box. If not there is a handy dandy long list of countries for you to make your choice.
GOOGLE ANALYTICS TERMS OF SERVICE
Next, my friends, you can take a moment, drink a cup of coffee, and read through the fascinating Google Analytics Terms of Service. Please be careful not to nod off during the reading of this. Now don’t forget to check the box next to “Yes, I agree to the above terms and conditions .” You’re almost finished! Now click the Create Account button.
After you have created your account you will now need to set up the tracking.
For a basic installation of a single website all you need to do next is copy the tracking code and paste it into your </head> tags. To set up tracking, you need to have access to the source code for your website. If you do not have this or this confuses you let your webmaster know and they should be able to quickly install this tracking code.
If your website is a WordPress site there are a multitude of plugins that allow you to easily insert the tracking code right from your WP content management system.
After installing the code and saving that page you should now have your tracking installed. Victory! It will take a little while for you to start seeing results in your Google Analytics account. Give it 24 hours or so and then you will be able to access all of the awesome statistics about your website and how people are finding your website online and just what they are doing while on your site. Enjoy!
